My name is Marlene
Vargas Solleiro. I was born in Mexico City in February 9th of 1975. My
parents are Adonay Vargas Cervantes and Maria Elena Solleiro Rebolledo.
They are an insurance salesman and office cordinator respectively. They
live in Mexico City. I spent all my infance and studied the elementary,
the junior high and the high school there with my older and only brother Adonay. He lives in
Oregon, USA where he's studying Economics at the University of Oregon.
I have a lot of hobbies. I like to read books, specially novels, and I love to listen to music. My favorite type of music is alternative, classical and instrumental. My favorites groups are Caifanes, who is now Jaguares. U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Los Fabulosos Cadillac, Enigma, and Robert Miles. But My favorite hobby is running. I love it!. I have ran since I was 12 years old I have been Mexico National Champion in 100 meters with hurdles for 3 years, and I have gone to two Centroamerican Games for juniors where I obtained two silver medals, and a 4th place. respectively. This took me to obtain an athletic scholarship in the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus where I'm studying now. In December of 1997 I finished my Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, in the area of Telecommunications/Digital Signal Processing. In 2000 I finished my master's degree in Electrical Engineering in the area of Digital Signal Processing. My thesis was based on the study of Time-frequency tools for signal analysis and real-time applications. As an undergraduate student, I worked in a project related with the study of Spread Spectrum Techniques in Digital Wireless Communications. My advisor was Dr. Domingo Rodriguez, who then directed my thesis work when pursuing my master's degree. I also worked in the design and implementation of PLINE. PLINE was a computer based unit for power line noise analysis and monitoring. Some of my research interests are:
development as an individual and as a professional. Each summer I had the opportunity to work in different places and this helped me a lot in improving my skills as an engineer. In 1996 I spent the
summer in Hampton, Virginia working for NASA Langley Aerospace Research
Center, in the LARSS
The following year, in 1997, I spent the summer in Milwaukee, WI. I was working for General Electric Medical Systems as a summer intern. It was one of my best and greatest experiences in all my life. For my projects that summer, I had to design a tool for the field engineers to determine Network configuration Parameters and did testing and validation of Wireless LAN stations. In 1998 I spent the summer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin again, working with GE Medical Systems. A great company to work with!. I worked at CT global business. I had several projects. One was the design and implementation a GUI (Graphical User Interface) for the IQTB (Image Quality Test Bed) for the new Helios CT machine. The IQTB provides a method for testing the accuracy of an image reconstruction algorithm before being implemented on a CT scanner instrument. I also worked in the evaluation and improvement of algorithms for the purpose of Image Compression using Wavelet -based transfromations. Wavelets are mathematical funcitons that cut up data into different frequency components, and then study each componenet with a resolution matched to its scale. Now I can say, Thanks Puerto Rico!!,Isla
del Encanto.
I feel my life was highly improved, with these great opportunities
that gave me the
I thank God for being with me every moment. I thank my family for supporting me all the time, specially my parents who have never let me down. I thank my two coaches Irma Corral in Mexico and Wilfredo Moux in Puerto Rico, for giving me the opportunity of being in Puerto Rico. I thank Willy, my last coach, who opened a new stage in my athletic's life. And I thank all my friends,
